Personality.
Outright aggression and otherworldly boldness define this colt in just a few words. He is fiercely independent and incredibly hard to handle on a daily basis, though not from lack of trying on the part of the grooms. He doesn't want to be touched, he doesn't want to be handled - hell, he doesn't even really want to be looked at. If you peek into his stall and he notices, all you're going to see is a head swinging with pinned ears and bared teeth. No one knows exactly why the colt is as aggressive as he is, but the staff have been able to start figuring him out. First of all, he works better when in a pair or group - for some reason, having other horses around puts him in a better mood. Second is a firm hand. He will submit only to someone who he deems more dominant, which is why his handling falls to Tigris and only Tigris - if Niles wants to fight, Tigris isn't afraid to fight back. After a lot of biting - on both ends - they've come to an uneasy agreement. As long as Tigris doesn't bother Niles too often, the big black colt will deign to allow him into his stall. It's really not unusual for Niles to go out for works with mud all over his legs for that exact reason. Grooming him just isn't generally worth the effort. When he's got his tack on and he's going out to work, Niles is much more mannerly. He knows his job, and while he'll never be a crowd-pleasing horse to pet on, he is much easier to handle. He listens surprisingly well under saddle, though he's still more comfortable when in a group.

Niles isn't the quickest out of the gate, mostly because he gets incredibly irritated if he's pestered and kept on his toes for the break. His biggest motivation is simply chasing after the other horses, meaning he's generally at the back of a field. His aggression takes a bit of time to build, but as the race goes on and he's held to the back, he starts getting antsier and antsier to take a swing at this competition. By the time they need to move, he's worked himself into a state ready for explosion and takes off for the lead like a shot.
