Personality.
Max is an intelligent and charismatic young horse. He has the sort of eye on him that gives you pause, because he's got incredible awareness of what is going on around him and it makes you think he understands just a bit more than a horse should. However, instead of being ornery as some intelligent animals can come to be, Max seems to genuinely enjoy life and his job. Now, part of this does stem from his regular turnout schedule - get him cooped up in a stall for any amount of time and coltish aggressiveness does tend to rear its head. However, when he's happy and healthy he's as friendly as a good number of the fillies. He's curious and interested in the world around him, though sometimes his flight instinct acts a little faster than his brain - it's best to move a bit slow around him, as he can distrust new things at times even though his natural curiosity generally wins out. He truly doesn't have many vices, and seems to genuinely enjoy being around human and equine companions alike. He's a great horse to turn out with new arrivals, since he isn't aggressive toward them but also doesn't allow them to push him around. He seems to have a good gauge of others, and does what he can to make them happy with him. Of course, this also translates to his work with people. If you don't try and push him around, he's perfectly willing to do whatever task you put in front of him. He rarely gets frustrated or sour, especially if you give him time to think over a problem. When under saddle he can be a little overeager at first while warming up, and this has him often a bit washed out before a race. He gets anxious and doesn't quite know what to do with that nervous energy, making him seem much more strung-out than he really is. When he does get to run, though, he's able to shed all of that drama and focus on what's asked of him. He's very responsive to his rider, and doesn't try and take his own head in most situations. The grass gallops on the farm seem to be his favorite, as he can simply stretch out and relax and experience the world around him without being confined to the dull monotony of an oval track.

Max generally isn't in much of a hurry after he's put into the gate, and breaks pretty slow. With his long legs, it takes him a bit of time to get going, but he doesn't get worked up about the other horses in front of him and is able to find his stride at his own pace. Luckily, when he does grab that sweet spot, it doesn't take him long at all to make it up to the leaders and vie for the top spot. He's not really an edge-of-your-seat type of closer, but he picks off horses one by one and makes a stealthy attack when least expected.
